Litter is collected through community clean-ups, group-picks, "solo" picks called Littter Vigilantes and our CE scheme workers

Monaghan Tidy Towns are continuously updating our anti-litter campaign. With a great increase in volunteers, a community approach and collaborating with the council, we have been succeeding in keeping litter levels low, leading to a 2nd (June 2024) and 3rd place (December 2024) in the IBAL national results.
In 2023/24 we updated our risk assessment protocols, created a Do's and Dont's advice leaflet and developed a kit for volunteers.
. After a committee meeting, we agreed and actioned the following documents and actions which we are sharing with all TT groups in our TT county network. We are making all available on this web site to be shared and/or adapted by all
  1. A new Risk Assessment for volunteer organisers.
  2. A practical guide to litter picking
  3. Litter survey documents (see our own litter survey of approach roads below)
  4. A Do’s and Don’ts leaflet for new volunteers
  5. A High Vis volunteer back pack – contents to include litterbags, hand-sanitiser, tissues, gloves, the Do’s and Don’ts leaflet etc. There is space for a water bottle or keep-cup.
  6. We began our Litter Vigilante Campaign with this video back in the day....see it at  https://fb.watch/rMWlyhGiDn/

Beat Litter in Monaghan - quick practical guide ...
Litter is a scourge but clean ups are a great way to bring communities together.
Everyone can roll up their sleeves to show that they care about their local environment and want to keep it looking beautiful.
Planning an event
Decide where you want to clean up, choose a central well-known spot which is familiar to all and choose a suitable start time. Contact local groups who may want to join in (football or sporting clubs, youth groups, schools etc)
Visit the site and carry out a risk assessment. Beware of dangerous items such as oil drums, hazardous substances, syringes or broken glass. Take note of natural hazards such as areas of water, slippery slopes, derelict buildings, busy roads etc.
Check the “Do’s and Don’t’s” from the advice leaflet.
Have a first aid kit, check if you have any personnel who are first aid trained. Antibacterial wipes or Decide meeting and finishing times Ensure everyone has proper litter picking equipment such as pickers, gloves, bags and high vis Note your outcomes or record progress with an audit form Let local media know or use social media for before and after photos
